is lagging in key states. we'll talk with newt gingrich about the reasons why and what the romney campaign should do. two years ago, the people of bp made a commitment to the gulf. and every day since, we've worked hard to keep it. bp has paid over twenty-three billion dollars to help people and businesses who were affected, and to cover cleanup costs. today, the beaches and gulf are open for everyone to enjoy -- and many areas are reporting their best tourism seasons in years. we've shared what we've learned with governments and across the industry so we can all produce energy more safely. i want you to know, there's another commitment bp takes just as seriously: our commitment to america. bp supports nearly two-hundred-fifty thousand jobs in communities across the country. we hired three thousand people just last year. bp invests more in america than in any other country. in fact, over the last five years, no other energy company has invested more in the us than bp. we're working to fuel america for generations to come. today, our commitment to the gulf, and to america, has never been st

story not too long ago. >> i want to talk about some comments that newt gingrich made that caused a little bit of a ruckus. there was a little bit of a back and forth between gingrich and romney. and of course, gingrich, never one to hold his tongue, had some choice words for romney, didn't he? >> reporter: he sure did. he was on "the situation room" yesterday. and of course gingrich and romney battled it out earlier this year, along with others, for the nomination. well, gingrich gave some advice on what's maybe not working for romney. take a listen. >> the romney campaign has yet to find a thematic way of explaining itself and laying out in a clear, crisp way the difference between romney and obama. it'slearly something you can go out and you can communicate and you can do dramatically better than romney's currently doing. >> just be who you are. others say, get tougher, attack. and my own view is this. i've got to be who i am and describe why i think i'm the person that's going to become the next president of the united states, and how my policies will make life better for amer

gingrich said, that governor romney should talk more about fracking and about what's really helping the economy in ohio. do you believe that mr. romney should talk more about those things? >> absolutely. because people have a misconception about fracking. in our area like we have six wells on our farm, water wells. everybody worries about their water. ours ranged from 135 to 175 feet deep. the deepest one i know in the area is 300. the fracking goes on over a mile down. and i'm not an expert on the oil business, but i can't believe something that's going on a mile down is going to affect us above. the second thing is all the chemicals that they worry about are generally household products that everybody has in their kitchen. they mix that with sand to hold the shale apart and that's all there is to it. it's not anything dangerous that i'm aware of. >> all right. jim long, thank you so much for joining us this morning. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >>> years after his presumed death, jimmy hoffa's legacy lives on. how the latest tip has sparked new interest in his mysterious disapp

akin staying in, we saw newt gingrich helping to campaign with him. might we see any outside money headed into the todd akin campaign? >> well, from the perspective of the national republican party, they're hedging their bets. they'll wait and see if it is close. sources i've talked to said they don't think it will be, but they're going to not close the door. but with regard to outside groups, one of the biggest ones, crossroads, karl rove's group, they insist they will not spend money there but there are other outside groups. one was backed by senator jim demint. they did a poll of their supporters online, and they all said that they believe that they should back todd akin and i think we have a shot of the website. so far they have raised $138,000 in a week online. so, you know, that's not going to win the race for todd akin, but it is more money than he had before and we'll see how much money they raise in the next month. >> that is missouri. let's talk maine. you and i have talked about senator olympia snowe, on this show, i want to say last week. she was talking about how -- ju
